Glendale looks like an option and I have seen some houses in Eagle Rock...but know nothing about that area.

I have been searching exclusively online but wonder: Is there an online newspaper/publication that lists a ton of rentals in one place?
You have to pay a significant fee, but I've found Westside Rentals to be really a good resource in looking for houses to rent.

Van Nuys is not really that great of a place. You know, you might also try Valley Village.

This place looked sorta nice, but I don't know if the train noise is an issue:

Also, you know, if budgets a issue, Encino is about as nice as
Sherman Oaks...less upscale...but its a nice area. Saw this place:

The issue with Encino usually is the problem of getting across the 405. But generally that issue is from Victory and to the south of that, with Burbank Bl being a huge problem. However, in this instance, it would be pretty easy for your husband to head north on White Oak to Vanowen and take Vanowen east to the Burbank Airport(it runs right to the airport). I'd guess 30 minute drive max, even at rush hour. As a bonus, you'd be right next to the Orange line bus which runs across most of the SFV and also goes to the Red Line Subway station in North Hollywood(where the arts district is) and the Red Line goes to Hollywood, K-Town, Downtown, and Union Station.

This Glendale house looks nice and is in a really great neighborhood:

Personally, I would look in Burbank, Toluca Lake, and parts of North Hollywood (the further south the better. Most say stay south of Oxnard Blvd but there are nice pockets all around). Burbank is safer, but I have friends who live in North Hollywood and say it's fine. After that, I would look in Glendale. A little further out... but not much further. After that, I'd look in Eagle Rock mostly just because I like Eagle Rock.

The closer to your job, the better, though. North Hollywood is probably your closest & cheapest bet. I wouldn't want to live in Van Nuys.
