that's what I'm trying to figure out what part of CA is best to move to, and tell me about it I know my dog is a really hard sell. Had the same problem her in PA, finding something is easy if you don't have a pet. My original post was about finding the best parts to live in.

Definitely look in less dense areas! The more rural and the better! There is a huge variety of places here so without knowing exactly what you're looking for it's hard to say "where", although for budget friendly but nice amenities I'm always drawn to Chico. Kind of in the middle of nowhere though so if you want beach or somthing it's probably not what you want.

Anywhere in the Westside is safe if you are reasonable about not making yourself a target. It just means keep your doors locked, windows closed, and valuables not in the open.

Rural is not "better"; it's only better if you like "rural". It's a matter of preference. Personally I would rather die than live anywhere rural; I prefer the city and dense and I love West Hollywood; trendy, hip and exciting.
If you look hard enough you can find a budget friendly studio (around $1k) even in upscale areas like West Hollywood and Studio City. Only problem is that most don't accept pets.

For a nice, affordable place with a dog in CA, when you don't have any idea where to go, high density on the Westside of LA isn't the answer. Sorry but I didn't see anything about upscale trendy hip or exciting in the OP. There are plenty of awesome places in the state besides that little tiny area.

You CAN find an affordable area on the Westside if you look HARD. I did. If you look EXTRA hard you might be able to find a place that allows a dog. It will be more difficult but possible. My place is VERY affordable and in West Hollywood.

Just wanted some ideas as to what areas in CA are safe and have affordable rent.

Thanks,

You lost your job three years ago. So you've not worked for three years.

I don't mean to pry but how do you eat, feed your dog, and have the resources to move all the way across the county to one of the most expensive states in the nation?

Something just doesn't add up......

Curious -- how did you find your very affordable apt? I lucked into a sweet sublet when I first lived here, but could find nothing in my range when the sublet ended. Had to move to the Valley, which isn't bad, but man I miss SM.

Craigslist... Use their search engine to narrow down price or location or specific features you want. You have to check Craigslist multiple times a day in the areas you are interested in; don't just check like once a day. Check all day because it's constantly updated minute by minute. I have a Blackberry so would check it all the time; especially when I'm going a #2 in the bathroom.... lol (Seriously, it helps time go by plus you are more productive this way). It took me around two months until I found something I liked in WEST Hollywood, not regular Hollywood. I wanted to go as further West as I possibly could (more upscale).

But there are other ways. For example; if you find an apartment that is managed by a property management company and you like their style you can find their main site and check out all their properties.

Another tip is to use Google Maps street view to view streets of neighborhoods you are interested in block by block; if they have a vacancy available you can get the phone number from either the sign in front from your pc or if google the address and the phone number will come up. Much more time efficient using Google street view and doing it from your pc. than actually going in person and walking around. This way you can check out 5 neighborhoods in 20 min and call the apartments you like instead of going there one by one. You have to drag the cursor and keep zooming in etc in order to go up and down the street etc. If there is an apartment name available google that to get the phone #.
