I can't stand this thing. It doesn't look like a flag becoming of a city in a First World country, does it? It actually looks like it could be some sort of funky throw rug that belongs on the floor of a pueblo hut -- perhaps it alludes to our future?

Well, I don't know. I can't say that it ranks up there with my favorite flags of all time.

Originally known as the "Fiesta Flag" it's been the official flag of the city since 1931, designed specifically to commemorate the 150th birthday of Los Angeles. The red is supposed to represent vineyards, the yellow, citrus groves, and the green, olive trees. The three colors also represent the city's historical connection to Spain (yellow and red) and Mexico (green).

While I certainly understand you're thinking that maybe it's a sign of the future, it is very much a comment on the city's past, James. But it still doesn't make it a particularly pretty flag.

Would you prefer it if the lines were straight and the middle was white instead of yellow? .

Didn't realize those were the origins of the flag. Yes, it does reflect the past, but it's ugly.

FWIW, the Mexican flag was patterned after the Napoleonic tricolor that became the French flag and which inspired a large number of other European flags.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with the Los Angeles flag.

i didn't even know that's what it looks like. maybe that is a hint to our future. maybe the spanish and mexican governments are working together to take back california. the spanish are telling the mexicans to send people over here. then, once there are enough mexicans here, they will rebel and start riots. all the latin american nations will join in on the fight and take back california. then they will work there way over and take back everything we took from them. in return, the mexican government is being payed the spanish b/c once mexico takes back part of the US, they will give it to spain as a colony.

Funny, some Gibraltarian friends of mine said "you guys should be careful, Spain will want to take you back after it's taken back Gib and then Portugal".

OTOH, Zapatero would be an improvement over Bush ):
