I'm surprised its their lowest crime rate in that long. I thought that until the early 2000s, Lancaster and Palmdale were very nice suburban areas, not much different from Santa Clarita or Simi Valley.

They were.

But what happened was that they overbuilt and people, like everywhere else, bit off more than they could chew on their mortgages. The glut of housing plus the threat of owners losing their own homes prompted many people to go the route of renting to Section 8 voucher holders, and you can guess the rest of the story...

Thankfully, the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale have both been proactive and both have invested heavily in crime-fighting tools.

The Antelope Valley in the early 90s had a spike in crime, which some blame it on the prison moving to that region. It had settled, but then by the mid 2000's it really spiked. Statistics show that the crime rate is continually dropping, due to the aggressive Sheriff's stance on crime, as well as their mayor. The region is apparently getting a much better reputation back. I think that The Antelope Valley has always been as nice as Simi Valley, but in very different ways. The Antelope Valley is much more country, and has a much stronger western influence; which includes rodeos, fairs, parades, and just rural lifestyle in general. It is separated from the gridlock of LA traffic, congestion and pollution, and still to a large extent the crime. The Antelope Valley is known as a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Simi Valley is nice in the sense that it is very suburban, and all that goes along with that. It is close to things in LA, and is a shorter commute.

Both communities are nice in their own ways!

True! You can still get large horse/farm property in the Antelope Valley, whereas, in Simi, you can't. In the Antelope Valley, you can live in a ranch house, art lofts, a cookie-cutter McMansion or a huge castle-like fortress if you want. It offers a lot of choices.
