My boyfriend and I are moving to LA at the end of January. We are both very excited. I feel that it is important to go out to LA once more before we move to look around at neighborhoods, etc. My boyfriend disagrees. Thoughts?

I'm also wondering when would be a good time to go, for leasing purporses, etc.

Thanks so much for all the help!

Of course a visit before you move is ideal. Whether it is essential depends on how quickly you will be plunging into work when you get here. As for time of year, I tend to suggest August because that is the hottest, smoggiest month so you will be able to see just how bad things can get in the Valley, Inland Empire, Pasadena etc. But you have missed that. If you're thinking of trying to lease before you actually arrive, don't visit more than 2 months in advance. Generally, the bigger and more expensive the place, the easier it is to persuade landlords to rent to you in advance.

I agree with you. You should come out before hand. Look around the area you will be working in. There are good and not so good communities everywhere. But if you do come out, don't look at it as a vacation. You can do the touristy stuff after you move.

January weather in Los Angeles is clear and beautiful. You can even see the Sierra Madre mountain range. It's my hope that my search for housing will turn up the ideal landlord in Sierra Madre that reads it's city forum! I hope to find housing before September 15th to begin graduate school. Unusual tips for looking include local coffee houses. The locals here are very friendly and helpful. As a professional cartoonist/illustrator I've run across numerous artists, musicians and creative professionals I'd love to converse with. Coffee shops and book stores are great resources for networking.

Internet housing search is limiting. My current search for a two bedroom includes driving around selected areas in Sierra Madre. Hand drawn notes say "Rent Me" on slopes, lawns and apartment buildings. Inquire within. You will love the creative energy of Los Angeles. Maybe we will become neighbors.

Sierra madre is a different city than most in So Cal. Very small quaint town. I have some friends that lived there for mnay years. I don't think you'll find much in the way of rentals online. Like the previous posters said it is mostly signs and word of mouth. great great lil town. The only place I can remember seeing apartment buildings is on Lime street and they are all fairly small complexes, less than 20 units.
as far as coming out, YES you should definately do that. When doesn't really matter the weather doesn't change much always clear and sunny some days hotter than other, just got sone witha heat wave with temps over 100 for a week or so

Okay, so that is an overwhelming YES! Go back again before you move! Thanks so much for the advice. I knew I was right, LOL.

We will probably try to move over the weekend of January 25 or the week of January 28. I have time blocked off for a trip November 29-December 4. Is that too soon to be checking rental availability?

If you find a complex you like and they don't have any rentals, you may get lucky by starting soon. Whatever you do, don't rent a place you haven't seen.

We're now thinking of going in mid-December so we can actually put a security deposit down on something if we find a place we like. My concern is that neither of us will have a permanant job in LA at that point. That may cause landlords to not rent to us.

Thanks again for the advice, all.

It's never too soon to check. Like another poster said; collect numbers of apt managers and call your favorites before you move to find out if they have anything coming available.
