Hi LA Community -

My husband might be taking a job in downtown LA, and I would transfer to my company located in the Westwood area at Santa Monica Blvd and the 405. I'm looking for suggestions on decent areas to live where we could get by with one car where the commute is bearable. Safety is key, however we currently live in the West Loop in Chicago and it's a pretty diverse neighborhood around the few blocks of town and I'm comfortable with that.

We would be looking for a 2 bedroom/2 bath (or 3 would be great) and ideally would like to stay around 2500/mo (but could go a little higher if necessary). Laundry in unit would be the jackpot. 1 parking spot also. We are hoping to have a child in the next year but would likely only rent a couple years before we decide where we would like to buy.

Are there any neighborhoods that I should focus on?

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Miracle Mile area is a good safe location with many amenities. A shorter car commute to Westwood but don't go through Bev Hills on Wilshire during rush hour commute. Rapid bus connection to DTLA via Wilshire, then the Purple subway in Koreatown to DTLA.

Thank you Saybanana. How are parts of Koreatown that are closer to the Metro?

South Park area of DTLA. You can get a 2bd/2ba loft for about that $2500. You'd commute to Westwood, hubby would walk. Probably about a 30-45 minute rush hour commute on the 10 or on Olympic Bl.

Ideally you'd want to live on the westside, but commute options from the westside just aren't there. And all the very nice areas in between are also difficult areas to use public transport(such as Hancock Park which is very nice.

Something like this might work for you:

Thanks JohnG72. We currently live in a loft and are used to that style, but do you know the vibe living downtown?
