I was watching the movie "2012" again the other night (an apocalyptic movie where most of L.A. was destroyed)... and I started wondering what is L.A's greatest historic tragedy?

We think of NYC and 9/11, SF's earthquake/fire, New Orleans/Katrina, the great Chicago Fire, etc... but I couldn't associate one single catastrophic event/tragedy L.A. has experienced. I mean, having grown up in L.A. I remember the riots and the Northridge Earthquake well, but I wouldn't necessarily match the level of gravity to that of the aforementioned.

What are your thoughts?

The various destructive brush fires over the decades and the earthquakes (Long Beach, Northridge etc) are as close as we can come to citywide destruction.

Then there are the circling vultures of "The Big One."

Exactly 20 years ago.
The '92 riots.
In some ways they were psychologically worse than 9/11 ; more people were killed in 9/11, but 9/11 was done by outsiders, not by people from within the NYC.

In addition to the 1992 riots, I'd also include the AIDS epidemic (although that was not solely confined to L.A.)

The sequence of earthquakes, fires, floods and riots in the early 90's were Biblical. It started just after Magic's anouncement.

I can think of two that I'd elevate as tragedies during my lifetime: (1) Baldwin Hill Reservoir Flood - 1963 and (2) 1965 Watts Riots - I believe was the beginning of the end for Watts.

Some would say 1995- when the Rams left. Not me though.

Even as a Rams fan, I would not call it a tragedy. More like an icy divorce.
