Hi there! I am currently finishing my degree and will be working for Kiewit on the I-405 Project beginning on June 4th. I have been looking all over the area as far as where to live. My office is located right off I-405 by LAX, however, most of the time I will just report to the jobsite on the I-405.

I am thinking about living to the north (Sherman Oaks, Encino). The apartments up there seem to be a bit nicer, bigger, and affordable as opposed to trying to find a place in Santa Monica, Culver City, etc.

If I'm required to drive to my office in the mornings/evenings near LAX, how is the traffic on I-405? How long should I expect it to take me to get from my apartment in Encino to LAX?

Any information/guidance would be greatly appreciated!

-Travis

i used to work for kiewit so i can offer you some insight. you may be put on the 405 widening project initially, but when that is done you could go be placed at a job site anywhere in socal (perhaps beyond). in the year that i worked there i worked at 4 different locations. also, keep in mind that kiewit's main offices are in santa fe springs which is on the complete opposite side of the county.

405 traffic is awful, hence your project. You want to avoid it if at all possible. You'll really want to determine how frequently you'll need to be in the LAX area (where is Kiewit's office near LAX? I thought they were in Santa Fe Springs).

There are about a million people traveling south on the 405 during rush hour .... not fun.

Thanks for the information. I'm actually working for Mass. Electric, they are a subsidiary of Kiewit. They are responsible for the majority of the electrical work on the 405 project.

Their office is located at:

6600 Center Drive
Los Angeles, CA

It looks like it is off of exit 48 on 405.

LOL exitnumbersaments.

For the average Angeleno, that would be "the 405 and La Tijera".

So should I focus on searching south of the project? (Culver City/Santa Monica/Westchester area)

Yes, in my opinion. This will put you right in the middle -between the project and your office. Whats you'r split between office and on site? Whats your budget?

I'm hired on as a Field Engineer.... so I see myself reporting to the jobsite more often than not, however, I do not know that for sure.

My budget is $1,400 max, preferably less. I need a one bedroom, preferably two parking spaces (my girlfriend will be living with me).

Also, she's graduating with her teaching degree and would like to find a job teaching early elementary, so ideally we would also like to be near decent schools that are hiring.

Right now getting teaching jobs is as difficult as getting acting jobs, due to the woeful state of the state's finances.
