The only way to buy contacts without a prescription is to go buy them in Mexico.
Costco charges about $79 for a contact lens exam.

At $4.50/gal for gas, Costco sounds cheaper.

If you know your prescription you can order disposable lenses from places like drugstore.com or whatever. Just shop around and see if you can find an optometrist in your area that is cheap, but you're probably going to pay about $70 to $90. Somewhere like Costco or Wal-Mart might be cheaper. But you want an optometrist who is going to do a good job, I've been to a few who gave me a really crappy prescription that was totally wrong for my eyesight. And if you have health insurance see if it covers eye exams...I used to have Kaiser and it let me go to one of their optometrists to get a prescription for the cost of a co-pay, which was like $30 compared with the $60-90 that a private optometrist who didn't accept insurance would charge.

You can't get contact lenses or glasses without a current prescription (under one year), not even online.
