So I'm 21 and a Massage Therapist, while my friend, who's 23, is going into acting (of course). We've decided that we're going to be moving around the October/November time this year, and just need a little heads up on what to expect when we initially move out there, and some suggestions on places to live in the LA area.
We're both going to be financially set by the time October rolls around and have a couple months worth of living expenses put aside for the initial move. We're just mainly worried about places to live in the area. She wants to be closer to Hollywood for potential auditions without living IN Hollywood, so she's thinking Pomona. I'm just wondering if that'll be too far a drive (I can only assume traffic will be a hindrance to her commute), and to be honest, I kinda pictured myself living somewhere closer.
Long story short, does anyone have any suggestions on good places to move for the both of us?

P.S. Our rent range is probably going to be around $1000 range combined.

Pomona is a long way, unnecessarily long for renting and making a living in and around Hollywood, unless they take a train or work odd ours.

Hint: Auditions happen in other places, not limited to "Hollywood".

Pomona is too far of a commute for interviews in an industry that can be, well, on the fly.

Thank you guys for confirming my suspicions. Do you have any suggestions on decent places for early 20-somethings to live? Thanks.

I suggest Echo Park, Silverlake, Beachwood & Los Feliz as that will put your friend much closer to auditions. As mentioned before auditions can be all over the map but these locations should be fairly central to them.
You may have to settle on a studio apartment at 1K per month as rents are going up here.
Good luck on your move!

Moderator cut: see note

What's so bad about living in Hollywood?

For your budget, what is this, a one bedroom or a studio?

You may practically have to live in Pomona to afford something for 1000 a month. Though the scuzzy part of Hollywood, Echo Park, Koreatown, North Hollywood, Van Nuys are not out of the question at all.

Plenty of young people with your budget (500 a month per person) are able to find decent housing in those areas. They are centrally located, just not particularly safe or nice.

You should look into renting a room, which you will have to share, from someone with a house or apartment. Student housing style. You will get something way better than you can on your own. Although it doesn't sound like it's going to work out well for you two unless there are some hidden job skills you aren't posting about. Good luck.

Trying to be an actor and coming in here cold, please live in Hollywood or West Hollywood. It's not just the proximity to auditions, but proximity to acting classes, playhouses, groups, etc. And the opportunity to meet people working in entertainment.
