Are you out here now? And have you been for long?

As I said earlier... it's more than just dropping your Rs.

There are certain people in my family that I never thought had accents. And now, when I go back, I can tell they TOTALLY do! (and they make comments like "I managed to escape having a Boston accent!" Um. No. No you didn't.) My dad (who teaches theater & speech) pronounces all of his Rs, and yet... you can totally tell he's from NE.

The longer I'm in LA, the more "accenty" everyone in Boston sounds.

If I ever asked for something with a "hey" instead of an "excuse me" or "please", I probably would have been beaten into next week. I have found that many times a simple please or thank you can move mountains. Everyone wants to a little respect and consideration.

I detect a California accent. I don't know how to describe it, but I know it when I hear it.

Huh. I wear Converse on weekends (they're damn comfy. People could pry them from my cold dead feet) and I get mistaken for fresh off the boat Asian all the time until I open my mouth. Most females I see are in sandals, heels, flats or flip flops.

Trust me, no accent, and I have lived in various places in the USA in my life. Nobody has ever said I sound like a NE'er. Totally no accent...totally.

How does the average person in LA dress? I am under the impression that I will just stick out like a sore thumb for looking less fashionable. Is it just in certain neighborhoods that you see people dress to the nines like Hollywood, Beverly Hllls?

Will you get that Pretty Woman treatment if you don't look filthy rich on Rodeo Drive?

No.

LA is a pretty casual place as it is - and you will see all kinds of dress, ranging from billionaires in t shirts and jeans to wanna-bes in suits on Saturday.

There is almost never a reason to go to Rodeo Drive.

You'll be fine.

Much more of a concern in Europe and the East Coast than out West.

If you are referring to my last post, tired, yes, angry, not at all. I was going to post a smiley something after the post, but didn't.

My friend (a Los Angeles native) and I were talking about ways to distinguish a 'true' Californian from an East Coast transplant.
The west coast resident will go on happily doing what needs being done.
The east coast transplant will continually drop how much better they had it on the east coast.

Life in CA is poorly portrayed on tv.
Very few people are like what you see on TMZ or the like.
