I noticed people who say they were born here don't know much about their city. I was shocked recently when I took a friend to a concert at Disney Hall and she stated that she's never set foot inside. None of my native co-workers (4) have ever been to LACMA. All of the non natives have. And many don't venture out of their living areas for anything.

realistically though, only a handful of LA transplants are from the east coast, majority of transplants are from other countries altogether

As for my fam in L.A., they been here all of their lives.

But the time spent mostly consists of drinking, gambling and tv. When going out, glendale would be the closest area, and occasionally hollywood.
It was always an assumption some place like disney concert hall is where wealthy white folks spent their time. Downtown was ghetto, hollywood is full of weirdos, and no one cares about the valley..

Are we referring to "LA natives" as those born in a Hospital in Southern California or are we being more generous and referring to those that weren't born in So Cal but lived there from a very, very young age (I'm talking 2 here) and grew up there?

There's a huge swath of Angelenos who were brought to Southern California very young and grew up with LA culture even though their birth certificates may not list a So Cal hospital.

If one is to include these people as "natives", I'll go along with it. For all intents and purposes, they are.

As for me, I was brought to Southern California when I was 3 months old and, although I wasn't born there, it's all I've ever known. There are a ton of "me" out there. But it goes to show that where you first see the light of day isn't necessarily "home".

Natives tend to be more down to earth and lowkey. Also less emotional yet more neurotic if that makes sense.

More reserved, more realistic, more cautious. Girls who grew up in LA tend to have a cynical, hardened shell.

Very few natives apart from a few Beverly Hills persians are the superficial hollywood types, those are almost all (broke) transplants.

LA natives use minutes instead of miles when asked "How far is ....?"

I agree with disgruntled's definition for the most part. Although I don't think I am neurotic...

but I do think they are more down to earth and lowkey. More reserved, more realistic.

People that come here from other parts generally have something to prove.

They have the I came , I saw , I conquered mentality all too often.

At first I thought this was ridiculous, but I'm starting to see the truth in it!

Anyone agree?? Disagree?
There must be differences between Least Coasters from Boston, NY, Miami, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Far as New Yowkers, on average, they are flashier. Many have grills (even if only crowns). Wear brighter clothing. Wear puff jackets. They wear more jewelry: men wear necklaces with hair sticking out of the shirt, while chewing gum or puffing cigarettes. Usually they'll have on Yankees gear or some other NY logo. The Boston people seem a bit more down home, Bo Sox gear, longer hair, sweater tied around the neck or waist, collars up, preppy. Almost all transplants say "Cali." I've never heard a true native refer to California as "Cali." <--considered gauche or faux pas.
