We're thinking of buying a house around 17th and Walnut just south
of Long Beach City College. Any advice?

That is not an area I would choose to purchase in, personally. It's not necessarily the worst part of Long Beach, but it's not what I would consider a good part of Long Beach, either.

And, for reference, that is the LBCC Pacific Coast campus, the main campus(which is in a nice area) is further east.

Maybe check out Alamitos Beach, there's lots of apartments with for rent signs on 2nd street west of Junipero. Should be a pretty safe area if you are used to living in a city.
