Yeah, right off Imperial, but it's definitely not the worst as was posted. Westchester is worse and east of LAX is worse. As for the original question, I don't think that airplane noise is even noticeable in Manhattan Beach.

having lived in MB, ES, and north of LAX. This is the rankings

El Segundo hands down the worse..not only noise, but earthquake type feeling when planes roar off taxi

playa del rey next. it is almost as bad as el segundo

Westchester not noticeable at all, but i lived about 2 miles north of LAX in westchester. this is disclaimer

Man beach.. nothing at all

Nothing lie Playa but it has improved with the new jet design. Depending on the wind you can get a good blast of sound on the beach like in El Porto.

I've been there a few times, and frankly, I didn't even think about airplanes. Funny, considering its so close to the airport.

As an update, in Manhattan Beach there is still relatively minimal airplane noise from LAX. But since early 2017, noise from smaller aircraft from Hawthorne and other airports has increased significantly. They fly at much lower altitude and are much louder than any large LAX type jets flying over the area.

The number of lower flying aircraft went from two or three per day pre-2017 to several per hour now. From early AM to late PM (sometimes beginning before 6AM through 10PM or later). It is also not unusual for two or three aircraft to fly over at the same time in close proximity to each other. Helicopters tend to buzz through at lower altitudes compared to airplanes. Loud airplane noise is now basically continuous.

Within the last year, Hawthorne issued a guide for aircraft to fly at higher altitudes when over our area and implement noise abatement maneuvers. But these are not requirements, so many pilots do not follow this guide. Planes are often loud enough that you have to stop conversations, or turn up earbud/TV volume. With windows open, it is worse. We no longer enjoy using our back yard to grill or have guests over due to the continuous aircraft jet and prop noise. At one point we had guests from out of town inside our house who said they didn't know we lived right next to an airport. It is 5 miles away!!

The good news is that West of Sepulveda, there is much lower quantity of aircraft and noise levels compared to East Manhattan Beach. It is a much much better location, even in summer when the number of planes flying over the beach itself increase.

The city of Manhattan Beach has indicated that the issue is "not our job" and to contact the FAA directly. The FAA does not respond to noise complaints. The city also refers people to contact the Hermosa City council since they have a city council member that is looking into some noise abatement options.
