Im 21 years old and I would like to live in LA,
I was wondering how much do I need to move to LA as a college age person

I DO NOT WANT TO BE AN ACTOR!!!! FYI

I have almost $4,000 but that would NOT last me even a week in LA! lol
Right now Im currently working and saving every penny!

I was thinking do I need $10,000 to maybe $20,000 for at least ahead start,

I have my own car, I know I need a car there because you need a car in Atlanta!

As of now I live in Atlanta, Ive been living here for most of my life even though I was born in Chicago! ANYWAYS I just need a change I feel like LA is more of my element, I do know that LA isnt whats on TV, that people who want to go there (wannabe actors) and try to make it and become an actor and that all of LA is like Beverly Hills!

I know this because living here in Atlanta for the music industry everyone esp R&B and Hip Hop wannabes be up in this city!

For me and how I deal with money Im pretty conservative about it I dont need the latest and greatest thing thats just not my personality, I like to have nice things but its not a Need!

But I was thinking for an apartment would it be cheaper to NOT have a roommate because I heard that having a roommate can sometimes, you could spend alot more than actually saving. Because you dont know peoples lifestyle, they may sleep with the lights on or TV which will run up the bill, if they are OCD and always have the water on cleaning and or bathing!

Somebody told me that I should find a studio apartment thats like $800 - $900 a month and just live by myself! I would like to be in a relationship but Im good being by myself too!

But I do know that I need money for
Rent
Deposit
Food
Clothing
Personal (Hygeine stuff)
Health insurance
Doctor, Eye and dental appointments, medication
Car insurance
Car Maintenance
Gas
Car tags every year
Cable/Internet
Garbage
Entertainment

Am I forgetting anything?

So my questions are

How much money do I need to have a start in LA without a job but looking?
Should I live by myself or with a roommate?

I do admit I still live with my parents! : ( And if I tell you my story my childhood and teenage years and also currently right now most people had told me that I need to leave my house NOW and live my life, Ill give you a hint my parents are Jehovahs Witness and Im gay! Oh yeah its VERY tough living here but financially Im just ready yet!

So what exactly are you going to do once you are out here?

Would you try to go to school at one of the community colleges? Or just work?

You could probably move out here with 5k saved up if you were going to get a job right away (not recommended). I think 10k or 20k would last you quite a long time, especially if you are looking for a place with a roommates, which I would recommend as you'll be a newcomer that knows nobody.

It is good that you have a car as it gives you flexibility for jobs and where you can live, but a car is not a must-have in LA, believe it or not.

4k is enough unless you don't plan on working. I had a job lined up and moved there with about that much.

And man, if I ha about 10-20k saved up I'd use it on something to invest instead of using it all to move somewhere

Problems that you think $4 won't last a week.
Nobody gives a crap if you're gay but I hope that isn't the reason you want to move to Los Angeles. You need a plan, a job or some special skill to support yourself. And I don't mean being gay.

Default Do you think it would be easy for a early 20's female to get a job as a graphic designer in Long Beach/LA area?

I want to move to Long Beach CA. LA is second choice. I want to move out there as soon as possible. I don't want to move until I get a job and also the minimum amount I want to save before I do. I am moving from SC. I have a degree in Graphic Design but took a break from looking for jobs in that field. I have experience in sales, customer service, telecommunications. Those jobs would be a back up. Hell any job would be a back because I'm going to CA no matter what. I just rather do what I love. Check out my portfolio to see if I am even halfway good for a job in CA ----> http://www.coroflot.com/aieshagreenlee/profile

aiesha, I work as an artist in LA, and the unfortunate truth is - at least in my personal experience - no one will offer you a job while you're still out of state. They want local people who can start fast. I had a few phone interviews but nothing solid until I made the plunge and moved here from AZ last year, and I was only 4-5 hours drive away.
