Hello All,

I have recently been on an apartment hunt and I found a really nice place in Westwood right by the Westwood Village (520 Kelton Avenue). I really want to move here, but I still work off San Fernando Rd. on the edge of LA and Glendale. I am ok with a commute of 45-60 minutes, but if its going to be a lot longer than that on average than thats a problem for me.

Google maps suggest I take the 405 South for like 2 miles and then take the 10 East to get across town, is there a surface street route which would be quicker to the 10? Like maybe taking Veteran all the way to National and then jumping on the 10? I ask because I have heard the 405 on the Westside is a nationally recognized nightmare every day.

I should also mention that I have flexible hours. I basically have to be in the office by 10:30am and I would leave after 8-10 hours. So I can go in really early or semi-late if it makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for any help on this, I really want to make this work as in a few years I will take a job on the Westside.

I like Westwood a lot. I went to UCLA and have visited since (my wife and I stayed at a hotel in Westwood Village recently). Prices are generally high, so I haven't heard of people moving there and then undergoing a long commute (more often people moving to lower cost areas far away even if working in Westwood). You don't give your exact work address, but it looks like the quickest route would be the 405 north to 101 to 134, etc. There may be some canyon roads (e.g., Laurel Canyon, Beverly Glen) to use to get to the 101 if the 405 is especially heavy. Even with the 405's rep, I would think the 405 would be heaviest heading southbound in the morning, but the 101 would be a bear during rush hour, and not real quick afterwards. I used to commute from Culver City to downtown L.A. on the 10 and disliked it, though that was many years ago. If you choose Westwood to Glendale, at least you have options and you could get proficient on monitoring traffic conditions via TV, radio, Internet, etc. If you did not have the flexible hours you'll have, I'd say definitely forget it.

I'd rather live closer to work and do without so much traffic, but if you really want to live in Westwood and can deal with the traffic (with your flexible hours), give it a go. Can you take a couple of test runs beforehand?

The flexible hours in addition to the fact I found a dual master br 2 bedroom where my rent will be 1050 including all utilities. I agree about the multiple routes theory, I basically have a few routes to test at multiple times to see what works best. Like I said if I can keep my commute to 45 minutes I am perfectly fine with that. It's the 1.5-2 hour commute which I refuse to suffer through on a daily basis.

Working 10:30 to 7:30 really wouldn't be too bad, the worst of the traffic should have died down by then. You could try taking Overland to the 10.

One of the more scenic routes you might like is taking Sunset Blvd. all the way. I used to go from Silverlake to UCLA that way, and it was actually faster than the freeways during rush hour.

Thank you for the reply. I suspected that leaving later would help out. I will try the sunset route sometime.

Just got back from a day in Westwood and I absolutely loved it there. I am definitely planning on going through with it.

Take advantage of activities at UCLA, and visit the Armand Hammer museum in Westwood and, of course, the Getty Center, just a few miles away. We found an excellent Thai restaurant in Westwood Village. No dearth of restaurant, shops, movies, there. Stroll through the botanic garden at UCLA.
