Moving to the Torrance area next month for a job.

I'm coming out next weekend to look for a place to live and would like to keep rent under $3,000/mo. The places I have looked at on online close to the beach are of course more expensive than those farther inland and generally offer less amenities as well.

I'd like to be able to bike on The Strand after work and on the weekends, and if I can get to the beach on my bike without having to load it into my car, all the better.

So I'm trying to determine how close I need to be to the coast to safely ride my bike from my home to the beach? At this time I'm targeting places in Torrance but would entertain other neighboring cities as well.

Torrance is relatively flat, so anything within 5 miles (west of Hawthorne or Crenshaw) will work. If this is big a consideration, you might want to consider your biking destination. The Strand north of the Redondo Pier is very wide and extends into Hermosa and Manhattan, and its abundant food, drink and activity. To the south, it takes a quieter but more picturesque route that terminates in,,,,Torrance Beach. King Harbor kinda divides these two legs of the Strand, so you might want to determine which direction you prefer, in addition to distance to the water.

3 miles is probably about as far as you'd want to go. 5 miles would be about a 20 minute bike ride. Could put your bike on a rack on a bus, maybe check doing that out to save some time and energy.
