Moving to LA in September. I'll be living to the Westwood area and hope to frequent Venice beach. I'm from an inner city urban area in MI. I know Lansing MI is no LA CA but is Venice beach really that ghetto? I was told as a "white boy" I'll really stick out! I'm assuming the person who said that doesn't know what they're talking about. Hopefully Venice beach is as nice as it's advertised.

I went to Venice Beach last month. There were all kinds of people there, White, Black, Hispanic, Asian. Just keep your wits about you, and that is if you go anywhere.

Venice, the beach itself, has some characters - specifically homeless/transients, especially at night. It's very well patrolled during the day so there is very little to worry about.

venice ghetto? maybe a hipster ghetto. it certainly isn't the cleanest part of town, but it's also very expensive.

I lived in Venice Beach and used to walk around all the time during the day. However, I went on a walk one night and will never do it again...
Lots of homeless around. Many of them were staggering around intoxicated at night, yelling at eachother or themselves. I tried to keep as quiet as possible as I walked bye so I wouldn't catch their attention. Have you ever seen the movie "Zombieland"?

Venice is such a huge mixed bag of everything from homeless, to wealthy, a high school principal might live next door to a widow on one side and an actor on the other.

K thanks! I knew he didn't know what he was talking about! I mean of course its gonna have its characters but he made it sound like it was full of bloods. He's from San Diego and went to Venice a few times. He said the area was full of "shady" looking mostly minority Pitbull owning gangsters. I know LA is rough in areas but its not like everyone is out to get u cause youre white. Im pretty used to diversity and the southern la culture is kind of what attracted me to the area. I was almost considering moving to New Orleans which I know isnt all peachy. So there are other beaches closer to the Westwood area? What're the names of them? All I have to go by is google maps all I see on there in Venice beach. Thanks!

Santa Monica beach is west of westwood (see, venice is actually southwest) and is much safer and nicer. However, santa monica is overcrowded. There's also Malibu to the northwest which is the best bet, very clean and safe.
