Is Los Angeles Metro local line safe at night?
I'm gonna study and live in Santa Monica. Since I'm an international student I don't really know how dangerous the area is and where the dangerous places are.

I really need to go out in early evening and go back home at night around 10pm.
If I wanna ride Metro local line from Hollywood Blvd to Mar Visa Barry Ave at night, will it be dangerous? Based on google map I need to take an hour and a half. So I will reach home at 11pm or so.

I heard something bad about the bus at night, like homeless on the bus and silly people etc. But I also heard something good.
Is the area my bus goes through pretty safe at10 or even 11pm?
How is it literally?

Thank you very much.

If you are a young reasonably attractive woman, you are going to have some problems on the bus lines. Theres no way around it, theres creeps out there.

But thats regardless of time of day.

Other than that you will be fine.

If this matches your description, do yourself a favor and wear a sweatshirt on the bus.

You WILL need a car after a while.

And take it from me, I rode the buses and trains for over 2.5 years, late at night the trains and buses I've ridden are usually packed with these groups:

1) Insane homeless people.
2) Illegal day laborers heading home.
3) Retail and restaurant service employees returning home from late shifts (I was a part of this group).
4) Terrified looking women.

The majority of the people on the LA Metro at night are men, and they tend to stay to themselves. However, the junkies/homeless folks are very annoying and mess up the buses by smelling bad or making noise. Just make sure you have earphones to drown out the insane people and you should be fine.

If they just smell bad or make noise, I'm fine. I'm afraid some of them would attack or talk with me.
I couldn't handle that.

Attacking probably not gonna happen. That's usually reserved for the other crazies. Bring headphones, that way you have an excuse to not listen to them or ignore the when they do talk to you (IMO inevitable on any transit system).

I'm sure there are but there's really no way to know... I don't commute on the bus (work at home) but the only issues I have ever had were with crazy people - probably one out of three buses I've ridden has a obviously mentally ill person on it, that doesn't mean it is an issue every time a crazy person gets on the bus, in fact most of them are pretty harmless.

Gang members won't bother you unless you yourself are a gang member.

Why would you go to SMC and live all the way in Hollywood, with a commute by Metro? I know a few Swedish girls in this situation, and it is quite miserable for them.
