What is the book going to be about? Can the plot be able to take place somewhere else and stay the same? If you haven't been to Los Angeles, you might want to visit there first.

Tried Google Maps? Have the driver anticipate a quick drive, per above posts, but run into a late night Sig Alert (look up the term) that delays them and causes them to try a series of alternate routes ("Take an alternate route" is a phrase any Angeleno knows), and then you'll sound more like someone who's been there.
