Hi.Mi name is Priscilla, recently a senior student accepted in Pierce College in Los Angeles to start my career as a Veterinarian.I choose California because I see it as a state with more opportunities in my field of work.I am going to be moving with my bestfriend who also lives in Puerto Rico with me and share the same passion. We wanted to know how is life over there? The transportation (Trains/buses) is it as efficient as in New York? Are two college girl students from a different state going to be able to survive in such a big city such as Los Angeles? We are going to be moving near woodland hills, and are going to be renting a studio since it is only the 2 of us.Any suggestions/comments or advice is openly invited. Thanks again

Pierce College is located in a pretty "suburban" part of Los Angeles. The area is very safe but the area is more oriented to the automobile.

Pierce College is served by the "Orange Line" which is a rapid bus line which connects to the subway (red line) in North Hollywood.

Orange Line

So if you live somewhere along this bus line you would have an easier time getting around.

Thanks, yes I have been investigating and I see that the public transportation is very efficient that a car is not really necessary, which is a relief in a colleg girls budget. Also I have seen that Los Angeles transportation is the 3rd most efficient in all of the U.S. I happen to know about public transportations because I was born and raised in New York and that is all we use...! Thanks!

1) No, Los Angeles is more spread out than NYC and there are fewer mass transit options. Many people will tell you to not even bother living here without a car. I won't do that b/c it is POSSIBLE to live here without a car. But it will be more difficult.

I think a ONE option to consider is for you and your friend to live in walking distance to the Orange Line (which serves Pierce College) and share a car you can both use. A cheap used one would be fine. I am assuming you will be roomates (from what you said).

2) YES, you can survive here for sure. But living here is not cheap. So be prepared.

This is a map of the LA metro/rail system. The city of LA alone is over 400 sq miles in area. As you'll see, the rail system only covers a fraction of the total area.

I thought you said you were from Puerto Rico. If you were raised in NYC, you'll find rent to be much CHEAPER in LA (as opposed to NYC).

Finding a job anywhere in the USA is not easy, but with the per-capita pet population in the area (good doggy weather), veterinarian skills certainly will help.

I think you will find living without an automobile quite difficult. Not impossible, but quite difficult.

I suspect you might find yourself renting a car every now and then -- or perhaps ultimately purchasing one for shared use.

One alternative that might work for you is Car Sharing, an alternative to car rental and car ownership – Zipcar . Zip Car is sort of a short-term auto rental program where it is possible to "rent" the car for an hour or two at a time, or so I'm told.

I've never used a zip car, but from what I've read about it, it might be worth considering once you get here.

Note that Pierce College is a "two year" college. To achieve your goal of becoming a veterinarian, you will first need to achieve a "four year" college degree, and then be accepted into veterinary school.

My point is that you will need to transfer from Pierce College to another college. Depending where you transfer, you might or might not need that car.

Yes,I am aware that Pierce is a 2 year college, after that we plan on transfering to UC Davis in which indeed we will purchase a car.And hopefully we will rent a car every now and then when we want to look around places in LA where buses or metros can't go. Hopefully buses/trains/metros aren't that difficult to move along in the next 2 years,im getting kind of afraid of them right now,LOL. And as for the jobs hopefully we find one now that we have experience with animals and working with Veterinarians, due to the fact that we are in a vocational high school in which we course Animal Health. Thanks for all the advice and any other suggestions/advice would be appreciated
