is USC really in a "dangerous black neighborhood?" (Los Angeles: crime, neighborhoods)

My parents are asian and we are from manhattan....after reading about the heavy amount of blacks in the south central area and the 1992 riots in which blacks attacked asians for no reason, my parents are extremely worried about the safety of the area....


i will never leave campus of course except for parties in local USC housing, but is the immdiate area around USC safe? how vigilant are the USC police in protecting students ?

Yes, it's a dangerous neighborhood surrounding the campus. Not to the point where you have to constantly live in fear, but you just have to be more careful. Anyone saying anything else is just trying to be politically correct. The USC police do a pretty good job of keeping the most immediate surroundings as safe as they can, but you still have to be careful, and you want to avoid venturing beyond the patrolled areas (but you probably won't anyways).

Last I checked, I was black, and I was told by a black friend at USC not to linger around off campus.

I'm a pretty physically imposing individual - but with the heart of a Care Bear - and they would care little about that in such an economically depressed area.

Perhaps it's my paranoia, but I wouldn't even go to school there because of the things I've heard. I mean, at some point, you will have to leave campus.


I know this doesn't help to do anything other than make you even more concerned considering a big ol' black dude is afraid of hanging around off campus as well.

I went to USC for grad school. The surrounding areas are usually OK during the day, but you have to be careful when it gets dark. Us male students would escort female classmates to the parking lot after evening classes just to be on the safe side.

One of my Taiwanese classmates was told told to "go back to his own country" by a black guy that he accidentally bumped into in the street. But, to be honest with you, that was the only negative incident by black person against an Asian person the time I was there. I never had any problems (I'm British-Indian BTW).

FYI Stay the hell away from Martin Luther King Blvd - that's a bad area! Thankfully that's not walking distance from campus.

i had a friend who lived around adams/western and he seemed to think it was pretty safe.

i only visited him there a few times, once after dark, i never felt unsafe.

there weren't a lot of people around, though, and i'm a guy.

Lol and quite naive too. That's only a few blocks up from some of tge most dangerous neighborhoods in Los Angeles. The western ave corridor from around MLK to the south, is a very crime ridden area.

MLK and Western is about 1.5 miles away from Western and Adams... not saying that area is a nice area but 1.5 miles is not exactly "a few blocks".

i think a bigger concern for you would be your fear of LA's supposedly super high STD rate.

after all, in your own words:
