So my husband and I both work in the tattoo industry (he's an artist/I'm a manager). We were looking to move to Long Beach, but curious about surrounding cities. Both in our thirties and big in the tattoo/pin-up culture, we really wanted to find somewhere we really "fit"! I was born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, and frankly, I hate it. We both feel like we're just out of place. So being a young couple in the tattoo culture, where would you recommend we look? We don't drink at all. We enjoy the tree lined streets, bungalows homes and historic homes and places. Not apposed to apartments if there unique and there are not a large number of units. Close drive to everything, but live outside "the hustle and bustle". I know I'm totally rambling I just have so many questions! Basically we were wanting to compare.....
Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, LA, Hollywood and in between. Our budget is about $1,400 a month. Of course we would like a good neiborhood Any help is much appreciated, and pictures too! Thanks so much!

I would check out Venice, still a lot of counter culture going on there, Santa Monica is very middle class and sanitized IMHO. Hollywood is pretty sketchy, West Hollywood is nice though. I'd also suggest you look at Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Echo Park. Hipster areas but still alternative and good night life and restaurants.

Pete

You won't be terribly out of place in LBs coastal districts, but Huntington Beach might be more up your alley

That's a great bit of information, thank you so much for taking the time to share your opinions. I will definitely check out the cities you suggested!

Huntington is cool, it's a bit more expensive than LB, but I like both towns.

I lived in Broward for 12 years, I know what you mean. Long Beach seems like a good fit for you guys, it seems more tattoo/pinup/rockabilly-centric, than most places in SoCal, in my opinion. HB is kinda similar, and not too far. In your situation, I wouldn't look further north than Hermosa, and you could look as far east as Anaheim/Fullerton.

Thanks! And so you get it! Broward, although for some...NOT FOR ME!! I think Long Beach has me most intrigued! I appreciate all the comments!

$1,400 will limit you to one bedroom apartments (at most) in all the areas you mentioned.
