Yes the guy from Houston said it. In Houston it's not this blatant. Unless you've been there there us no point to your quip.

I've spent several weeks in Houston. Which means I've spent more time there than you've spent in LA.

And you learned nothing. The gap between the rich and poor in Houston is way smaller than the canyon of a gap here in LA. Never have I seen so many homeless. I've never seen a homeless Mexican migrant worker begging for money in Houston. Whole sections of LA are littered with homeless.

People look like they're struggling here. The recession hit this place HARD. So what are you basing your ridiculous assertion on?

A lot of visitors are stunned at what you can do with 30k and some good credit in Houston. The dollar goes far for being the fourth largest city in the country. A term was coined because of it; "30k Millionaire".

Just stop right now. You don't know what you're talking about.

This is a thread about Vancouver vs LA. Who cares a rats ass about the armpit of Texas?

You could not pay me enough money to live in a hell hole that is Houston. Rednecks, Jesus freaks, gun worshippers, football thugs and disgustingly fat whitey bubbas. Yee haw!! If you love Houston more power to you.

Vancouver vs LA? Is that even a comparison? If you were talking about thinking of moving to SF, I'd say it is a viable comparison.

In Vancouver, you're talking about one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its like living in SF, but with the backdrop of Lake Tahoe. That is just amazing. It is also a much more sustainable city and has a great urban, outdoor vibe to it. Yes, it is expensive, but I think it is the price of living in paradise. While Vancouver isn't the top job market in Canada, it does have a fair share of high tech jobs and is growing reasonably fast.

In LA, you have better weather but the air in most of the area is awful. The exception is the coastal areas, but those are super expensive to live in (higher than Vancouver). You have to drive absolutely everywhere. Unless you're one of the lucky few who lives near a Metrolink or light rail line and work downtown, you're going to need to use your car a lot. And the traffic is awful, the worst in the US. Yeah, LA has all of the big city amenities of NYC (which Vancouver doesn't have), but its not all that accessible. Everything is so spread out that most people can't enjoy this on a regular basis. As someone else mentioned, the schools range from good to terrible. But, if you want to live in a nice neighborhood, you're probably talking about a suburban wasteland, where there is absolutely no culture and you are very far from the big city action.

If you were talking about moving to LA from one of the Midwestern US cities, I can see the appeal. If you're talking about moving from Vancouver, I wouldn't do it. If weather is your primary draw, I'd look at the SF Bay Area or possibly even looking abroad for cities like Sydney.

Way to miss the point there! You just projected your own insecurities.

I was just talking about the gap between rich and poor. Texas is an armpit. Houston is a wannabe LA and ugly as hell to boot.

Criticizing the huge gap between rich and poor in LA is not saying that LA is horrible.

LA > Houston, even with the massive gap. Living the high life as a single male with 30k in Houston is still not even half as exciting as living in LA.

In the last three weeks you've gone from describing LA as a "dystopia" to "unexceptional" to "Houston with more scenery" to apparently now thinking it's the bee's knees. And you've been here for, what, a month or less? Forgive me if your observations about anything seem less than reliable.

But it's all those things! It's the most beautiful and ugliest city I've ever seen. It's dynamic and unique.

I would say LA. The average temperature of 70F, good beaches (water is much warmer than Vancouver), sunshine and palm trees are great. Vancouver is beautiful, but so is LA, just different, more Mediterranean-esque. I believe LA is also more diverse, but it is more of a smoggy sprawl, which is an issue, and is very dry. However, you can find areas that are walkable and near public transit. It isn't as bad as it is stereotyped. The smog used to be a lot worse.
