People always say you shouldn't look for any apartment under $1200 in LA but what is wrong with all those $800 studios in westside rentals?

Nothing. They exist, they're just very small and don't have a kitchen. They may or may not include a fridge and "hot plate", but you could always get your own.

Maybe they're west of the east side.

The things you have to look for: does it have a kitchen? Does it have a private bathroom or do you share with others on your floor? Are there any laundry facilities on the premises or do you need to go to a laundromat? Is parking available or do you fend for yourself on the street? Are cable and internet access available or is the property not wired for such things? What's the neighborhood like...is it residential, mixed use, industrial and what amenities are close by?

Depending on the details an $800 place may end up costing you more than a $1000 place. There are plenty of decent studios between $900-$1100 that offer what most folks want, they are just small.

I paid $950 for a 1br in Glendale that was decent and the area was extremely safe.

Now you won't find anything like that on the Westside or Santa Monica where it's sooo expensive!

Thats not entirely true. There are sub-$1000 studios that pop up on the west side every now and then. They're small, have no kitchen, and haven't been upgraded recently, but they're out there.
