I'm moving from Mississippi (all these places would be WAY better than here, sperling ranked it worst state to live in) in January and I was wondering which of these places would be the best place to live for a 20 year old male who loves art, is big into music, and gigantic into skateboarding(this ones pretty much my life). I tried to make the move to san diego in august but I wasn't able to stay even though I had managed to find a place to rent for 475 a month with utilities. I've probably spent the most time in LA and the least in PHX. Overall, I haven't really been able to get a real feel for any of these cities. I know phoenix has many free, padless skate parks which is why it is one of my considerations but LA and SD apparently have a lot of skateboarding going on but I dont know where and im pretty sure there are pad laws in the states of california. I'm sure LA and SD beat out PHX on the art and music scenes but I'm sure they are a lot more expensive to live in too. I do know PHX would be way too hot to live in during the summer. I would like to attend a good community college wherever I go and if anyone could suggest some good areas to live I would appreciate that too, thanks.

Thumbs down Phoenix

I'm not much up on skate parks, but Phoenix wouldn't even enter the realm of consideration for me no matter what. I state publicly that I HATE Phoenix. This leaves a decision between LA and SD. My hunch is that the bigger of the two, LA, would offer more opportunities all around. So in summary:

First - LA
Close second - SD
Out of contention - Phoenix

Default Cre8 summed it up best.

L.A. or San Diego. Period.

Phoenix doesn't even count.

Phoenix is HOT, extremely hot. There's no ocean, so you feel the full brunt of the desert. The weather is miserable.

People seem to think that Phoenix is 'like California'. It's not. It's a very dull, sprawling, boring town, not a whole lot going on. The sprawl is even BIGGER than Los Angeles, and without a doable transit system to handle it (and that's really bad, considering how much L.A. transit is lacking).

It's also *VERY* conservative, very *ahem* Right-wing, not a progressive, or forward-thinking city at all. The Rush Limbaughs, Don Imuses, and Bill O'Reillys of the world would LOVE Phoenix *hint hint*.

Los Angeles is skateboarder/art/music central. Plenty of skateboarding going on in Venice and Santa Monica, plenty of live music in Hollywood.

But L.A. is expensive, and honestly, kinda dangerous (for a 20 year old). Lots of teenage/young adult gang members out looking for trouble all the time.

L.A. is DEFINITELY more fun than San Diego, no two ways about it. San Diego is also pretty conservative (but not as extreme as Phoenix), and rather gentrified/wealthy/snooty, but they *do* have a skateboarding scene (unlike Phoenix). I'd still suggest you check out San Diego first, for safety's sake, (crime/street gangs are minimal, despite Southeast San Diego) then come to L.A. when you get a tad bit older and more established. L.A. is where you should ultimately settle down at (from the choices you posted).

I'd like to chime in as I live in Phoenix, and for all you Phoenix haters.... YOUR RIGHT!! The ONE SINGLE THING I think about most living here in Phoenix is the day that is about 8 months off when I will pack my bags and never return to this hell hole in the desert.

Where am I going? LA where I lived as a kid (I lived in San Diego as a kid too so I know all three)

Phoenix is like LA without the beaches, night life and attractions...or Vegas without the casinos... just a huge sprawling city of one half ghetto Mexico full of illegals and gangs and one half lost souls chock full of rudeness and trite self absorption. My friend don't even think about Phoenix...its an utter waste of space. Think Baghdad Iraq replacing Iraqi's with Mexicans and car bombs with check cashing places.

Now having lived in SD and LA, as a young art minded guy I would choose LA over SD...SD is beautiful, but I think you will find many more places and people appealing to your type in LA...and the more the merrier.

thanks for all the replies. I actually tryed to move to san diego just this last august but it didn't work out. having to come back to ms for a few months made me realize that this is the last place I want to be and have to move somewhere out west. I know phoenix has a skate scene with lots of parks, but you guys make it sound like phoenix is the worst place ever. i thought the only thing really bad about phoenix was the summer but apparently thats not so. you guys are making l.a. sound really appealing though

Phoenix has all of LA's problems (with the exception of housing costs) and none of its good aspects. If you took all of LA's negatives and took out all of LA's positives you'd have Phoenix. Phoenix has a higher crime rate than L.A., and for gangs South Phoenix is just like East L.A.

Skateboarding is big everywhere in SoCal it seems so I think you can find a skatepark anywhere nearby, it seems like if you are near the beach there are always people skating everywhere.

The Navajo word for Phoenix is Hoozdo, meaning literally "This place is HOT".

I wonder if the Navajo have a word for 'This place is hot, stinky, sprawling, boring as hell, ultra right-wing, and filled with crystal meth-heads and tweakers?'

Just wondering.

I hate Phoenix and San Diego equally. Boring, soulless, uncultured trash bins. Who cares if San Diego is more beautiful than LA? What are you going to do with the "beautiful scenery"? It doesn't make up for living in complete boredom.

Move to Los Angeles. It's all about LA. Just look in the right areas.

L.A and San Diego offer much more than what you'll get in Phoenix, but Phoenix is more Affordable.
