My son is on leave for a month. He and his wife want to visit the LA area for a couple of days. They want to see the beach-Venice, Santa Monica. Hollywood area. See the sights.

So where is a safe and good area to find a hotel? I suggested Santa Monica, but my son didn't like the prices. As I left for work he was thinking the West Hollywood area. I said I'll ask around.

Areas to avoid?

Thanks

What is his budget? That would help in giving suggestions.

West Hollywood will be a similar price range to Santa Monica.

If they are just doing the "touristy" thing then they really shouldn't have any problems regarding areas to avoid. But they may want to avoid East Hollywood.

hotels.com will give him a list of different hotels with different prices for different areas. If he doesn't have a rental car, it might be the best to stay in those areas he wants to see.

my co-worker's retired in-laws had good luck with priceline a month ago. Their schedule is flexible so they were able to book last minute. HOWEVER, they dropped his wife off at work & used her car for the duration of their stay. If your son won't be renting a car i'd suggest sticking along the Santa Monica blue bus line routes. It extends out to Mar Vista/Palms/Culver City where motels will be cheaper. Another friend's sister visited from the East Coast and he booked a room for them at the 4 Points Sheraton in Culver City, across from the Westfield Mall. According to her it was clean & reasonable, but not luxe by any means.

The safe and good areas are the ones that are expensive, like in SM.

My friend rented the house on 1428 N Genessee Ave, LA. The lady who owns the house rents it out to visitors. My friend paid some $400+ for a week.
It's also very close to Hollywood Blvd

There are 17 hotels in West Hollywood. The cheapest are the Alta Cienega and Holloway Motels, at around $70-80 a night.

Most others are pretty expensive, like the Le Petit Hermitage, Chamberlain, London, Sunset Marquis, Mondrian...upwards of 200-250 a night depending on season and time of the week

The closest to a reasonable rate would be the Ramada... let's say around 150 for a basic room

This is just the city of West hollywood. Plenty of other options adjacent.
