Hi Everyone,

Lately i cant stop thinking about emigrating to US and im pretty sure id like to live in LA. ive been there twice and liked the vibe and weather etc.

Northern Ireland is really starting to bring me down with how backward, negative and small minded it is.

Im a partner in a successful small music company and there would also be some benefits for the bussiness if i was in LA.

I can work anywhere that i could set up a small studio.

I earn around $110k (£75k) p.a.

what sort of standard of life would that sort of money enable me to live?

i.e.

what areas could i live in?
would i be comfortable?
how costly is health insurance?

Where would be cool to live to connect with other musicians, singers, songwriters, producers, etc?

I have around $80k saved up which i was planning on investing in a house here in N.I. which im really starting to reconsider. Im guessing this will help.

I believe i can get an L1 visa through my business but i need to do more investigation in that area.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I think you could live a very nice life in Los Angeles based on what you are stating.
Health Insurance considerations may depend on what the government does in the next election...

you will need a work visa btw I own a home in Fermanagh i also go to Belfast Fashion week and went to the MTV Music awards. I dont find it backwards fact I see it as up and coming . London is much more ahead of LA when it comes to music

You can live fine on that renting just about anywhere in LA.

Expect a studio/loft or 1 bedroom in the 1000 sq ft range in trendy/nice areas to rent at about $1500-2000/mo

Theres small houses near some of those areas starting at $1800-2500/mo(2bd/1ba, 800-1000 sq ft).

Private health care insurance starts at around $2500-3500/yr and I forget how much deductibles are, but theres money there too. That may change in the next two years depending on who holds political office.

A lot of the music industry is still centered around Hollywood. You can find much less expensive rents nearby in Studio City and Valley Village which are plenty nice areas and ~10-15 minute drive to Hollywood.
