Hi,

I'm looking for somewhere myself and mum can stay in LA for 20 nights (14 nights with a car, the other 6 without).

We have held a room at the Hampton Inn in Sherman Oaks, but can't seem to find any detailed information as to whether the area is safe, walkable, has public transport nearby etc.

Does anyone know that particular area well ?

Also since we have the ability to cancel the above hotel, we wondered if there were any other areas we might have missed that might be better for walking ability, safe to walk on own (especially in evening), shops & cafes nearby etc.

We are quite familiar with areas like Burbank, North Hollywood and Studio City which we are still looking into but wondered if perhaps there were areas similar to these without the hefty hotel prices.

Any advice, ideas etc would be appreciated

p.s. with regards to public transport when I don't have a car, I'd be looking to be able to get to areas like Burbank, Hollywood, West Hollywood and Universal.

Thanks

Sherman Oaks is pretty nice, suburban, safe, lots of shops and restaurants, walkable (along Ventura Boulevard) probably one of the most cosmopolitan communities in the San Fernando Valley (along with Studio City).

Check out Go511 | Los Angeles Traffic | Commuter Information | Road Conditions as a one stop shop for transportation information.

When you do use a car, be aware the 405 and 101 freeways are very congested in the Sherman Oaks area and south through west Los Angeles, west through the San Fernando Valley and east through North Hollywood and (134) through Burbank and 5 east to Los Angeles.

the hampton inn is next to the freeway and not very close to anything remotely touristy. the closest thing is the galleria at sepulveda/ventura, which is not even a walkable distance in the summer heat. i would stay closer to ventura blvd, from where you'll have access to bus line that will take you all over the the valley in addition to many shops and restaurants within walking distance.

Thank you, I guess we'd be OK there with a car hmmm.

Perhaps I'll have another look around, are there any other areas you would recommend?

Sherman Oaks is a wealthy area in the SF Valley so yes it's relatively safe compared to the areas around it. Just watch out for run down areas and police presence. The more cops= the more dangerous the area

That's totally backwards thinking. More cops = safer area. Just look at Santa Clarita. Every other block I see a cop car.

When my mom comes to visit she stays at the Courtyard Marriott on Ventura by the mall. Lots to walk to from there. Really nice hotel.
Courtyard Los Angeles Sherman Oaks: Sherman Oaks Business Hotels

Much better location than the Hampton Inn.
