Hi there! I'm a Canadian and just got a job in Redlands. I realize its kinda far but I'm dying to be close to LA, and maybe find a job bartending on the weekends... I can afford between $1000-$1400 in rent and am willing to commute an hour to an hour and a half for work. Can anybody suggest a nice place to live where I can have the best of both worlds? I'm a young professional looking for a diverse yet safe area to live. I appreciate any suggestions because I have never even visited California. Thanks!

Unfortunately, I am not that familiar with the far east side of LA County and out toward Redlands in general. However, commuting one to one and half hours in SoCal (or anywhere with traffic) is extremely stressful. It is not like a country drive. Consider this when others respond.

Yes, commuting in LA would be very stressful and I've never done it but I've driven around LA and southern California enough and lived in San Diego and its just stop and go with the occasional insane person in a huge SUV or truck shooting by you on either side or behind you only to cut in front of you and slam on their brakes or almost rear end you. You have to be alert the whole time and constantly be pounding on your breaks, also it'd be hard to judge and hour and a half commute because the traffic varies so you can't predict how its going to be on a given day.

Live in Redlands. There's a college there and some things for young people to do. The surrounding communities (like San Bernardino) have tons of illegal aliens, gangs, and crime.

Do not commute in LA, you'll be sorry! I use to have an hour drive and if it rained here 2 hours plus. 4 hours on the road is a waste of life, don't do it.

A 60-90 minute commute might only be 20-30 miles on a good day. 30 miles from Redlands barely gets you into LA County and only about 1/2 way to LA proper. Redlands may as well be in a different state than any place you'd want to tend bar like Hollywood or west LA.

Redlands is a pretty damn nice place to live. There's a university there, and it's one of the only sane cities in the Inland Empire.

Unfortunately, Redlands is not that close, from a commuting standpoint, to LA. Quite frankly you'll probably be bored silly out there. But at least you have the weekends to get away to LA, Orange County, or Palm Springs.

Yeah, and spend hours on the freeway going very slow. I'm amazed at how bad traffic in/out of the IE is even on weekends.

Redlands? Is'nt that in the 909? You will hate it. No where near L.A. My advice is, take the job so you can move here, then immediately start looking for employment somewhere in Los Angeles County then move as soon as possible.

If its the "LA life" you seek, you will NOT find it in the 909 or I.E.
