I have been to Long Beach a few times, visiting friends and attending conventions.
All in all it's been a good experience but I have seen a lot of thugs around and heard the news reports.
So what areas of Long Beach are "safest"? less crime, less gangs, etc???

I may move there. Not sure.

Hello,

The areas of Long Beach where crime is least apparent and active are:

Belmont Shore -- zip 90803
East side -- zip 90808
In the environs of Cal State Long Beach --zip 90815 I believe

The city is a patchwork as far as safety anyway, so there may be places outside those areas that will be just fine.

Some of 90806 and 90807 (Bixby Knolls and the area next to the north side of Long Beach would be good).

I hear good things about downtown but someone with more intimate knowledge will have to chime in here.

East of the traffic circle is generally the delineator geographically as far as eastern lb.. Bixby Knolls and anything within a few blocks of the coast

Bixby Knolls is part of that Long Beach State area, like mrsltd said, Belmont (to include Naples) the east and I'd throw in the area between Belmont Shore and Downtown from Ocean Blvd to a couple streets east of Broadway.

The rule of thumb is, if you are going further in (North) than the 4th street, stay on the East side of Cherry avenue, preferably East of Redondo ave.

Here is a zip code map of Long Beach on C-D:
//www.city-data.com/zipmaps/Lon...alifornia.html

I'd stay away from: 90813 (the part below this area without a zip is downtown area and it is OK for most), 90810, 90807 and 90806 (90806 overlaps with 90755 which is actually Signal Hill and it is a decent area).

Good luck and don't let the bad thugs bite.

The west and the north parts aren't as nice.

Generally.

I'm considering moving from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach, but San Pedro around the corner is also on the list. I'm really glad I stumbled onto this site.....it's been very helpful. If you just give me a zip code in the SFV, I can tell you about the neighborhood...but Long Beach? I'm pretty much lost.

When I checked out the rental ads, I noticed right away that you get a lot more bang for your buck if you want to live close to the beach....as in Santa Monica vs. Long Beach. Now that I know the zips to look for, I'll be more informed. Thanks!

Yeah this is one of the last affordable beach cities! Long Beach is not all that bad of a city. I live in the traffic circle area and love it, no problems. Someone awhile back posted a map showing a line down 2nd over to Cherry and then up. I think the hood has shifted somewhat since then.

I find anything east of Redondo to generally be safe-ish (nowhere is completely safe). Bixby Knolls (it's NOT close to Long Beach State, that's Bixby Village you're thinking of) is a pretty area of Northwest LB. It has beautiful old neighborhoods and California Heights is nice too, but both are surrounded by some really sketchy areas and Compton's not too far north of there.

Downtown has a lot of investment but it's not really clear how much of it is paying off. It might just be pushing the hood north. Definitely stay out of Central Long Beach north of downtown and the westside.
