moving to LA from NY.......... advice on where to live (Los Angeles: apartments, to rent)

Hi there,
I am going to be moving to Los Angeles in the next few weeks from New York. I got a job as an attorney for a company in the entertainment field. My start date is on May 7, but I am looking to settle in a week before that. As someone who is new to the area, can you please advise me as to where I should live?
About me: I am a single 33 year old man. My interest include playing golf, tennis, swimming, going to movies, sports events, bars, restaurants.. etc. I come from a very preppy environment from New York/ Connecticut. So I am looking for a neighborhood that is more the preppy/yuppie type that is filled with people in my age group (late 20s to mid 30s) I would like to live in a neighborhood that is more affluent. I am a very social person, so I am looking to meet new people and make friends. My work location will be between Century City and Beverly Hills. As far as budget is concerned, I am pretty open ended on that, and am willing to spend a little more if I really like the place. I am looking to rent for the first couple of years. Any advice you could provide me would be helpful.

I recommend checking out apartments in Beverly Grove, and Fairfax/Melrose these neighborhoods provide the atmosphere you're looking for. Melrose is one my favorite streets in LA it has an affluent vibe, but manages to be totally unique, interesting, and lively at night. You can check out West Hollywo as well always a great time there it's also LA's gayborhood. There's the flats in Beverly Hills south of Burton winch is definitely upscale as well, this is as "preppy" as it gets here.

With the CT preppy vibe and a job that puts you in Beverly Hills sometimes and an open budget as an entertainment lawyer, definitely look in Beverly Hills itself. West Hollywood is a solid choice if you want more city amenities and stuff and to be in an urban environment, but it'll be way different from CT and something you're probably not used to. If you want more urban, then go to WeHo. But it has a large gay population so the preppy CT look may not fly as well there.
