I have kind of grown to really like the look of apartments here - the set backs give a more "open" feeling while still definitely being in a heavily populated area.

And where do people in the suburbs of Pasadena commute? Does a suburb have anything to do with a commute? The OP might like to define suburb.

Initially, my definition of suburb was small.

It mainly consisted of single family homes in one clean cookie cutter fashion with no buildings nearby. Also that it had to have a more industrial, or concrete feel to not be suburban. basically all the characteristics of a city should be absent for it to be a suburb.

Corner stores

noise

sirens

graffiti

industrial areas

apartment buildings

high density

culture

buisiness

murals

trains nearby

Overall it lacks that quiet sleepy and calm feel that you get from a typical suburb.

I'd say of those only Anaheim is really much of a suburb. Riverside and San Bernardino are sort of exurban satellite cities, while Long Beach and Santa Ana are middle-ring satellite cities, and Glendale is a first ring satellite city (along with Pasadena and Burbank). Santa Monica is essentially neighborhood of Los Angeles (like Beverly Hills, Culver City, etc).

All of these areas have suburban and urban characteristics in their neighborhoods, with the exception of Anaheim (I suppose it has a very small downtown but not much compared to Santa Ana or Glendale).
