Hello. For those taking the time to answer this, thank you.

If one were to move to the Beverly Hills region from Britain for work, how would one avoid the pitfalls that seem to be so commonly known about the area? In particular, people who might be attracted solely to wealth or those who might be looking solely at someone as a means to an end such as meeting celebrities and the like.

Obviously, there are certain universal rules. I don't go down to pubs as a general rule and dance clubs aren't high on my list of things to do. Is Beverly Hills as bad as some have suggested or is there a way to navigate through the maze of social interaction that it's made out to be?

Not sure what you are asking. What have you heard and what are you afraid of? What kind of work will you be looking for?

Oh, I've already got work lined up or I wouldn't be considering a move. There are several threads here that have suggested LA as 'The fakest city', or that nobody is 'down to earth'. Also, there was a thread some days back about someone from England asking if breaking in to a celebrity's house and handing them demo tapes was appropriate. I can assure you that such behaviour would be frowned upon here as well.

As an example: Let's say that someone were a very successful banker out of London(I am not a banker, though I do some investing). One would think that Beverly Hills would be a relatively safe place to live as everyone would be well-off, so there would be no need for trolling around looking for the wealthiest or most famous. Is Beverly Hills like that, or more similar to some of London's areas like Knightsbridge, where there are people from former Eastern Bloc countries looking for their meal ticket?

Is there any special rules about avoiding those types and finding more normal people in Beverly Hills?

If you want to avoid the fakery of LA then Beverly Hills is not the best place to be. All the negative stereotypes associated with LA stem from the Westside and BH is a prime example. The rest of LA is surprisingly down to earth and really friendly. To such an extent that the people resent any kind of "fake" or douchey behavior.

My take is that you're not a snob but are used to living in the cushy parts of town, eh?

I hope I'm not. Generally, I try to be open and friendly though that's not always possible. I was looking at homes and found some i really liked in Beverly Hills, but UCLA had some good homes as well.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to having a barbecue and it not raining. This has been the wettest summer on record and I'm currently wearing a sweater and a jacket as I'm headed home. I look forward to having the neighbors over.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. I think most folks who post negative things about Beverly Hills don't have any real knowledge and are just passing on myths. Like many very upscale places, you will have all kinds of people living there - the truly mega-rich, highly-leveraged wannabes, people on the fringes, etc.

How you fare is completely up to you. If you choose to drive the fanciest cars and like to be seen, then you will attract a certain type of hanger-on and certain types of women. If you want to live a private life, you can have that too. It's just the same as everywhere else.

Beverly Hills is mostly residential, ranging from modest old apartments to very flashy mansions. Most of the nearby socializing would happen to the East on Sunset or in Santa Monica, so BH is not particularly relevant to the bigger question you seem to ask.

If you were a celebrity or had an influential career in the entertainment business, that would be a far greater factor in how people treated you in that area of LA than whether or not you called Beverly Hills home.

If you're at the age where you're looking for a future spouse, I must say (disclaimer: there are always exceptions) upscale LA is probably among the worst places in the US. Many people move there because they have something to prove and serious relationships are a lower priority. It's not uncommon to see educated, attractive and successful people marry for the first time near age 40, if at all.

On the plus side, if you're young and unattached you have nothing to lose if you've always been curious about these places so heavily portrayed in the media. Worst-case it'll be another life experience for you.

Of course every neighborhood is diverse but some of the stereotypes hold true and most of what people think of LA is based on those stereotypes found in Beverly Hills, West LA. Saying there is diversity in all neogjborhoods doesn't change that. I've been there, partied there, shopped there, ate there, etc. There is truth to the myth and there's no need to apologize for it.
