Your right Fresno is much safer and cleaner City then LA. People that live in the big City such as the author of this post tend to be closed minded to other places other than the place they live. I have been to Fresno and its a much better place to live and raise a family compared to crime riddled neighborhoods in LA and Encino.

People are very very ignorant when I tell them how nice Sumerlin and Las Vegas is.
My house is not even close to the airport, but it is West of Summerlin area. I pay $800 a month for a 3 bedroom (I have a family) I would pay 3 times that much for the same property in LA and to top it all off I make about the same money in LV as I did in LA. I am married now and have kids. I did date when I was in LA but I really did not have any serious relationships because I was so busy working to pay the rent for my Encino apartment. When I moved out of LA things really picked-up for me cause I could easily afford my rent, car payment and I could afford to date women and had the time to put in because I wasn't working 60 hours a week. Summerlin is a nice area and you can buy a house now for really cheap. A few years ago there were Million Dollar homes now the same homes are half the price. When the economy improves the home prices are going to shoot up again. You can buy a 4 bedroom house in Summerlin for $150k to $250k and fill it up with a family as you get closer to 40 years old. Your not going to to get that in LA, not even in that bad neighborhoods like Compton/Watts/Van Nuys/North Hills/NO HO.

Some places come really close outside of LA but still in the state. I know Palmdale and Lancaster offer similar prices but I think the houses are a bit smaller and older (ex. two bedroom for $130k built in 1989 vs four bedroom built in 2005 for $130k in LV). But then again, the gas and food is more expensive still compared to out of state. I can't decide which one is worse. Unless you live by the beach or happen to come from religious roots, LA is still not a good environment for kids. But neither is LV.

I think what you said about the affordability is definitely spot on, though. You can work considerably lower hours and still live comfortably out of state and in some other countries.

I know what you mean about Palmdale and Lancaster being cheap, but living in the LA area for all those years its just something I could never do (live in those areas) First of all the Cities are really in the middle of nowhere, they have high crime rates as well and really lack any refinement. I think if I lived there I would feel miserable just about everyday. Kind of like the feeling you might get it you lived in your car or trailer park or if you drove an old car stuck together with bubble gum. You went from saving a buck to compromising your morals. LV while Im not sure its the perfect city at all but where I live there is top notch amenities and good school districts. I guess I never planned as far ahead as to if children will be influenced by LV as they get closer to 18 but I think that age 0 to 16 is no problem.

I could have written this. I grew up in the WSFV too. My dad worked at Lockheed in Burbank. Box Canyon hippies? Yep. Go to Calabasas Pool and you hear all sorts of middle eastern languages being spoken. Chatsworth horse country, Yep.

That's exactly what I told my father, who claimed he would never go out of state since they don't pay as well and none of them offer the same jobs he could find in California. Places like Palmdale, Lancaster, Riverside, Modesto and all these wannabe hick towns will never match up. I've said this in several other threads, the other state places still bear an advantage with education, sales tax, and certain plants and climates not found in California, no matter which area you live in.

I definitely agree, things like the location and the population are sort of run-down over in those cities I mentioned.

I used to have a friend who was born in Modesto but raised in Las Vegas, she traveled between both and she mentioned that raising kids in LV is difficult since it is catered for more of an adult audience. She said those ages are indeed a problem since after school, the kids tend to break into bars and watch porn on the Strip. Religious communities exist but from what I've seen, the people there do seem to be more of the alternative crowd. Then again, we have that too in LA with the kids living in DT and SC. Another classmate mentioned that he liked both since LV has other things to do, but he still missed LA.

And wouldn't you know it, so does Las Vegas:

While not exactly a college town per se, I'm sure there CSUN has a strong influence on the demographics.
