Does anyone have info on how to get a job at the container ports of Los Angeles or Long Beach? Are they "city" jobs or private? Thanks in advance.

Just to clarify..... I am talking about where the cargo ships come in and are loaded/unloaded with cranes and containers moved around with large forklifts.

The Port of Los Angeles | Contact Us

http://www.polb.com/about/employment/default.asp

http://www.polb.com/about/employment/jobresources.asp (note "only a small number of the people whose livelihood depends on the Port are actually employed directly by the Port of Long Beach" and "Workers within terminals are employed by the terminal operators, who lease land from the Port of Long Beach. Most construction and environmental project jobs are filled by the contractors hired to complete the projects. Many of these jobs require specific skills").

It sounds like you're most interested in jobs with shipping companies. Try them, and the unions (e.g., International Longshore and Warehouse Union -- contact info on Port of L.A. site).
