I suppose it's stereotypical to say California doesn't have good pizza. But damn, the pizza I had there was among the best. Possibly even better.

I heard Pasadena is pizza-haven in LA, I only got the chance to eat at Settebello there. But it was to die for, as was 800 Degrees in Westwood. As good as what I've had in NYC.

The point is, LA can more than hold its own. This goes for other types of food, too.

They used to have this one joint called Red Brick Oven in Pas, but they closed after two years. Romeo's on San Gabriel and Colorado is pretty good, though.

As a NYer, I've found some pretty decent NY style pizza out here.

Im very fond of Surf City and Papa Joe's in Huntington Beach.

But in all of SoCal: Village Pizzeria, Coronado, San Diego

There's an awesomely authentic Chicago style pizza place in Placentia called Tony's Little Italy. If you're craving that real Chicago style deep dish, this is the place to go.

We live in NYC and most of the pizza here is total c r a p. It's soggy, overly sweet, undercooked, with gross toppings. EVERY place we had pizza in LA was phenomenal. Cannot figure out the obsession with "NY" pizza. Marco's on Santa Monica in West Hollywood was delicious! Also, Cafe 140South in Pasadena.

When I lived in South Pasadena & Pasadena, we always visited Petrillo's in San Gabriel and had the Petrillo's Special (XL) and I could feed my family for 2 days.

Don't know if they are still there, or not.

They are indeed still there. Matter of fact, I attended high school just around the corner. We went several times, but it's expensive for what you get. IMO the crust is dry but supposedly they pack on plenty of toppings. Plus, they've been around forever.

Thanks for the update! I miss Petrillo's and will need to try it again sometime when I am in the area.
