Used to make OK money doing mobile auto detailing around the L.A. area. There is always a great demand for this there. If he can scrape up some new customers for a detail business, he may do alright just with that, and move up to accounts or management (assuming he's not down with polishing cars, which ain't a bad skill to have, in a pinch.)

Surprised no one has recommended working for the biggest employment company in California: Central Casting

Background work in movies/television. If you have a face, you can find work with them.

My old roommate makes about 34K a year off it. Not amazing money for LA, but decent as long as you put in the effort to call up and book a job.

Common sense: the local paint store has no use for the BA in Economics from Rice University.

He needs to only apply for jobs where that credential makes him more competitive.

Extra work sounds good. Will tell him to try that.

Found a decent telemarketing job for him pitching environmental product services over the phone. Pays decent and it's literally a block from hom.

Also, lien claimant for a copy service firm. He'll be calling insurance companies and demanding money from them to pay for copies of medical and employment records on behalf of attorneys for workers comp cases. Sounds very boring and they only offer full time positions.

Which one sounds like the better deal? Thanks.

Apply to as many jobs as you can. So that you don't even remember whether or not you applied to places. If you say "well, I applied to this place, but didn't get a job" that's a wrong approach. Also make sure your resume is stuffed with the keywords an qualifications that they are looking for in the job listing. Don't outright lie, but do stretch the truth. Tell people that you know personally that you are looking for work. In a city with millions of people, there are plenty of job opportunities. More competition too.

I haven't read every post, but one thought is to apply to retail stores. I would think the type at the mall, chain stores, because at this time of the year they always need help, esp. on Sundays. Although seasonal help is laid off after Christmas, if he is good they might keep him on the schedule. Retailers usually want great flexibility, so his not having a car may be what is holding him back. They expect backflips for that minimum wage job with no future...

Not having a car is, of course, not helping the situation. I know you know this, but wanted to mention it.

Hey, wait a sec, here's a thought: how about the porn industry...just kidding! Yeah, it's late....

Although I once saw an ad back when I was 23 that read: "Bored? Need money? Try selling exotic lingerie!" My family and I had a good laugh over it! We still will joke about this..well, Katnip, are you bored? Need money?.....
