Safe, kids friendly, near Cal State LA? Start with the closest, Alhambra and Monterey Park, which are both fine. If you want good schools, you WILL have to pay for them. Have you looked on greatschools.net?

Your best place to live near Cal State LA is going to be South Pasadena. It is safe, beautiful, and has great schools. If you are OK with living in an apartment, it won't be terribly expensive, compared to the surrounding areas, and will be VERY MUCH worth it for what you get in the schools.

What's your budget? South Pasadena is my favorite out of those areas (very good schools, great parks, very safe, extremely family friendly). My second choice would be Alhambra, especially the area just south of South Pasadena near Alhambra Park. Schools are better in South Pasadena, though, but you'll probably find a better deal on rent in Alhambra.

I was going to suggest Eagle Rock. The elementary schools are good. To the OP, try, realtor.com. All the current MLS listing will be there. just put in what you are looking for. Someone said Glendale and So Pasa, you will not get a lot in either area for 600,000 but there are a few.

If the kids are little and not going to be going to high school in the areas, I would suggest Pasadena or Alhambra with Monteray next..A lot depends on your housing budget..

I just read you last entree, are there 3 or 4 of you? I am only asking as a 1 bedroom seems awfully crowded.

I like Hollywood, but it's not really kid-friendly. There's a library, and a few parks and playgrounds, but you could do a lot better for kids for the price (not to mention be closer). I'd concentrate on Alhambra.
