I have a friend that wants to live in West Hollywood (he's gay), but has been offered a good job out in El Segundo.

Even though I lived in LA for several years, I have no idea where El Segundo is. For those that are familiar with both cities, exactly how many hours or minutes is it driving from West Hollywood?

Thanks.

El Segundo is just south of LAX. I'd guess anywhere from 45-75 minutes depending on when he works. With zero traffic you could do it in about 30 minutes but of course that's pretty rare in LA during the week.

Yeah, easily an hour if not more. La Cienega (the main thoroughfare from West Hollywood to the LAX area) gets pretty congested. His commute home will be worse than his commute there.

Thanks Dunbar and Disgruntled.

I'll tell him this. I knew people who would drive from Encino to work in Century City.

You gotta go where the money is, but I think he should try finding a place near his job and driving to West Hollywood on the weekends or a couple of times during the week.

It will his decision though.

Encino to Century City is nothing like WeHo to El Segundo. It's maybe half the trouble.

He's in for a not fun commute. Then again, I do a commute equally bad and I"m still functioning....And I'd rather live where I have fun than commute there (due to DUI and other risks)

75 mins only during high traffic hours, i know because i've done it and 20 mins during low traffic hours. People overstate the traffic here. after 10am and before i'd say 4:30pm Monday-Thursday Saturday and Sunday are usually good times to drive if it's before 2pm unless you're going to the beach. traffic in LA isn't really as bad as people say it, it's just a lot of people don't know that that you don't get on at certain times and if you have to, take a parallel street until you can get on and it's not that bad. 20-30 mins will be the usual commute depending on where in El Segundo and West Hollywood.

How is the traffic at 5:00 or 6:00am?

20-30 minute will not be the usual commute unless you're going off hours, like 5 or 6 am. By Rush hour in LA is generally 7 am to 10 am and 2 pm to 8 pm on weekdays. So off hours will be closer to 20-30 min between WeHo and El Segundo. Not during those brackets, more like an hour or more.

20 minutes door-to-door from Weho to El Segundo is only possible by helicopter. No way that's possible in a car even at 4am.

25 - 30 minutes is more like it, i'd say. i live in westchester now which is immediately north/north-west of el segundo and i hang out in weho/hwyd often so have to drive. rush hour times it would be a nightmare but late at night it's really not bad at all.

i would suggest that he try and find a place that's closer to work. the rent will likely be cheaper and he'll save a ton on gas money too. he can always go hang in weho on the weekends
