It's definitely a time warp, and the food is good as a bonus.

Palm - on H'wood Blvd near the 101. Slightly hip, authentic Thai.

Pinks, Canters and Jerry's are terrible. Versailles is only good if you've never been to Miami or NYC and had proper Cuban food. For a good deli, hit Langers or Brents. For good Cuban, the only real option is Porto's.

I'd second Comme Ca for the best burger. For upscale dining, Hatfields and Red Medicine are pretty exquisite. Animal and Son of a Gun are also worth a try if you can get a reservation far enough in advance.

Everyone should stand in line for an hour for a mediocre, over-hyped hot dog just to say they did it. After that, they should hit Skooby's on H'wood Blvd if they want a decent dog.

Dare I mention Oki Dog?

I can't believe Tito's Taco's isn't on the list. Or Johnnie's Pastrami. Right next to each other off the 405 in Culver City, these are two of the best locals in LA. Johnnie's is a bit pricey but worth it, plus they still have the jukebox control at your table from the fifties.

Tito's always has huge lines but don't worry, they're very quick there and yet the food doesn't taste like an assembly line, even though it looks like one.

I grew up eating this food and it was always a special occasion

I grew up on Tito's Tacos as well and,IMO, it is nothing special -- just a popular local hangout.
Johnnies is good but I'm not a huge pastrami fan.
