My friend and I are looking for an affordable apartment in a safe and pleasant part of Long Beach. Any recommendations? Long Beach seems to be the way to go, because we are looking for a place that is close to LA and Orange County.

Well, what's affordable to one person isn't to another. I've lived in downtown Long Beach for more than 35 years and think Long Beach is a pretty good place to live. I'm going to list some property management company websites. These are the ones I used to look for apartments for my younger sister when she thought she was going to move back to California. These have the price and other info for each apartment and usually some photos too. If you find any places that interest you then you might want to come back and ask people if they are in safe areas. But there are quite a few people who answer questions here who think the whole city is bad yet they don't even live here, so how would they really know? Though most of central and parts of north Long Beach aren't as good as some would want.

I don't live in Long Beach, but I think it has one of Southern California's best combinations of urban life, unpretentiousness, and relative affordability, a neat town.

Depends on your budget and where you need to commute to. During rush hour it's about 45 minutes or less to most job centers in Orange County, and about an hour to downtown LA. And commute times depend on where in Long Beach you live since it's a pretty big town.

If budget isn't an issue, then Belmont Shores has really nice housing and a ton of restaurants and bars on 2nd street. Downtown has a lot of shiny new condos but is a weird mix of poor people and rich people. In between are areas like Alamitos Beach and Bluff Park which are really nice.
