Hi- we are not moving to CA, but we're taking a road trip this summer and would like any kind of info about where to go;what's the best, most family friendly area in CA to visit. Thinking about San Diego or LA .It seems like there's a lot to do in both places. We're not going to Disneyland but another water or theme park would be ok. But looking for off the beaten path sites to see. Any ideas? We definitely want to stay by the ocean. Also, we are on a budget Thanks! Coming from Indiana.

Here's a couple of links from Yelp, although one of them (bucket list) may have allover the states, but it does have some ideas for LA & San Diego. Ofcourse there are many more, but too many to list...

They don't mention the usual tourist attractions, but its different, some budget minded.

Bucket List - Los Angeles

Places to go in LA - Los Angeles

As for Water themed, (above list mentions Santa Monica Pier)

LegoLand Water Park, San Diego
Knott's Berry Farm's Soak City, Buena Park
Raging Waters, San Dimas
Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, Valencia
Aquarium of the Pacific/Queen Mary & the Pike - Long Beach
SeaWorld, San Diego

Good luck Indiana! (former Indianapolis resident)....
