both are nice suburbs of L.A., each about 35 miles from downtown LA. Irvine has a larger Asian population than Santa Clarita. Santa Clarita is mostly Caucasian with small but sizable Asian and Hispanic populations. Both have access to good medical facilities. In the Santa Clarita area, you want to stay within Valencia or Stevenson Ranch to be in an area comparable to Irvine.

Irvine pluses:

- close to O.C. beaches
- Irvine Spectrum
- U.C. Irvine
- balmier weather
- cleaner air (usually)
- Disneyland & Knotts nearby

Santa Clarita pluses:

- more affordable
- easier access to points beyond the LA Area (Las Vegas, Mammoth, Northern CA/SF, the Central Coast, Santa Barbara etc.)
- people seem friendlier
- Six Flags Magic Mountain
- diverse job market

I am assuming the OP is making a joke here. That is like comparing Santa Clarita to Beverly Hills. The differences are innumerable. The income level is vastly different. First of all, location and weather is vastly different. Irvine has great location great weather, close to the beach and surrounded by many wealthy upper-class cities. Santa Clarita has terrible hot and cold extremes and it floods. The income is much lower, the only area with a moderate income is Valencia, but it is surrounded with low income areas like Newhall, Saugus and Castaic. Santa Clarita is mainly Hispanic, while Irvine is white and Asian. The closest bad city to Irvine is Santa Ana, while Santa Clarita has bad parts within the city limits, like Newhall. Newhall is like Pacoima. Santa Clarita is also right next door to the disgusting cities of the San Fernando Valley like Sylmar, San Fernando, Reseda, etc.
If this is a joke fine, but otherwise, be honest and don’t try to convince people that Santa Clarita is even close to being as nice as Irvine.I take offense at the fact that Santa Clarita is even compared to Irvine.

Some of these responses are mildly hilarious. The worst parts of Santa Clarita are still very safe by national and LA standards. As for the weather, the further you get from the beach, the larger the temperature swings, but we only used our air conditioning for a total of about 3 weeks this year in Santa Clarita. It cools off nicely in the evening, so we just leave the windows open and it's quite comfortable without AC. The humidity is lower up here, so unless the daytime high is over 105 (rare), it's really not uncomfortable. Of course personal preferences vary, but we moved from the northeast, and I find the summers here less uncomfortable than the humid ~90 degree weather in NJ.

I suspect pears has never actually been in santa clarita, because saugus is most certainly not "low-income."

As for the commute, I think people who commute to downtown LA from SC are crazy. Unless you can avoid rush hour, in which case it would be fine.

It is hilarious that you think Santa Clarita is anywhere near as nice as Irvine.

Not sure where you received the information is mostly caucausian. It is only 56% white, and almost 40% hispanic and minimal amounts of Asians and blacks. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/06/0669088.html

Maybe, I stated it a little strong. I just can't stand Santa Clarita after living there for a little while.

There is nothing even remotely similar or same about those two locations other than the fact that they are both in CA.
