I am turning 17 in May and finish Sixth form in around May - July 2014.
I am wanting to move to Los Angeles to go to college or university, as i have seen alot about Los Angeles, espcially Santa Monica and the surrounding areas. I can save up money up to the point I leave for LA, and looks likely i could afford the fees for University.
I want to go into the career of film making, such as post-production.

I would like help with information on apartments that are good in the Santa Monica area.
Obviously i would like help with the best Universites, as I have looked at UCLA and USC.
I would also like to have any first-hand opinions on the life-style in Santa Monica and the surronding areas.

,Thanks

USC does have its famed film school. It is also served by the Expo line for public transit. If you can afford it, USC film grads are working in industry and sometimes just being from the program can get you in the door. You still have to prove yourself, but you are granted an opportunity that some NOT from USC film school are granted just because someone hiring or others highly placed in the production chain is an alumni.

USC has housing off campus in downtown LA, as well. I would investigate USC Housing and compare to rent.

You're gonna need like $200,000 to pay 4 years of tuition and cover living expenses for 4 years in LA. Even if you go to a public school like UCLA, you'll be paying a lot in out-of-country tuition. Even for California residents tuition is expensive at public universities.

So, hopefully your parents have a lot of dough.

Assuming you get the school tuition thing sorted out, you'll love Santa Monica. It has one of the highest number of British expats or so I've read. Also a number of pubs and British shops for when you get homesick for pasties or hula hoops. You'll want to look in the Ocean Park area close to Main Street as that is a popular area for young folks. The area around the 3rd Street promenade is also youngish. It is not cheap. Also do not discount nearby Venice as it is also near the beach. Abbot Kinney is where most of the trendy shops and cafes are, as well as nearer the beach, of course. Also not cheap.

Mike

Hi, I'm 17 and from Birmingham in the UK, also thinking of going to a university like USC or UCLA. Just wondering what the area around USC is like, I have heard bad things, but I assume that what I have heard is just biased by the media?
Thanks,
Andy

The area immediately surrounding USC isn't great. The university housing should be fine and you can always live off campus in a better neighborhood if you want to. BTW, I was talking to a British expat who claimed there are 60k brits living in Southern California.

The area around USC is generally not great, but it's been getting better over the last few year. There's the new Expo light rail line which could take you to USC in a straight shot and goes through possibly better neighborhoods.

Around USC is fine, just dont cross the bridge into south central, west adams is a good place to live, next to downtown and close enough toe the metro line station to go anywhere without a car. Santa Monica is expensive, but if you can afford it, its a jewel, but if your going to USC or UCLA from SM everyday... GOOOODDDDLUUCCCCCKKK :P
