Films shot in and/or take place in Los Angeles. Its quite a long list, but the movies that break out of the Hollywood cheese-wall are pretty stellar.

My two favorites are oldies but goodies. 1) Chinatown: despite the title most of it is filmed in Echo Park, where I live so the "HEY I know where that house is!" factor is prevalent HOWEVER, it happens to have Jack Nicholson oozing noire badassery.

2) The Wild One: Sure its a little 50's-ish, but Brando nails it as usual, mixing machismo with repressed vulnerability as a Biker good-for-nothin' with a soft spot for a sweet little small-town girl, whose parents revile Brando and his gang. It was filmed in Burbank, but the back of the Hollywood mt. is pretty recognizable in the distance of the small town movie set.

Magnolia is my favorite movie, about LA or otherwise. It was kind of a box office flop, so I'm not sure how many have seen it. Paul Thomas Anderson is the man and that's his best work IMO (and in his opinion)

500 Days of Summer. A nod to the beautiful architecture in Los Angeles.

For movies based purely upon the LA cinematography they bring? I love Heat, Collateral, Drive, (500) Days of Summer, and Seven Psychopaths.

Bowfinger, a good laugh at budget movie making.

L.A. Story also funny. The weatherman who has so little to report everyday. Steve Martin in both.

Speed

Have to say, it was funny seeing the 105 Freeway (which hadn't yet opened when the movie was filmed, but was open by the time the movie opened the following year) portraying both the Santa Monica Freeway, and later itself.

Loved the architecture but the movie depresses me, not that it was bad, just hated how that chick did my boy.
