That's probably good advice. I've always tried to avoid renting as I see it as dead money, but for such a big move it could be a possibility.

For 800k, you can get a nice, modern condo in Santa Monica or a starter home (dated, but on a good sized lot and location) in west LA (east of santa monica, south of brentwood and north of culver city).

I'd take a look in Santa Monica 90405, 90404 or west LA at 90025.

I'm partial to 90025 but 800k can get you a lot more than you may think here in the westside. Good luck!
