Why not go for San Diego? It's way cheaper and the air quality is better but the people are more behind.

I've lived in SM since 1987. Very few houses can be bought for as low as a million dollars. Maybe a half dozen in that range are on the market at any one time, and they all have problems. Right beside the freeway, or beside the airport runway, or it's a crappy tear-down, or tinsey-tiny.

The cheapest house this past summer was listed for $739,000. It was in the less desirable Mid-City area, and was 720 square feet. No front yard, no backyard, no garage. The garage had been converted into another room, hence the "spacious" 720 square fee.

I'm sure low-skilled workers of any race can find work in Santa Monica, but I doubt any of them can afford to live in SM, or anywhere near the beach.

Low-skilled workers earn minimum wage, and nobody can enjoy California's "paradise" on minimum wage. You'll have to live in a dangerous neighborhood far from the beach, take a long bus ride to your job, then bus ride back.

Ever see WAITING FOR GUFFMAN? Among the deleted scenes is a hilarious one of Fred Willard and Katherine O'Hara pursuing the California Dream on minimum wage.

Yeah ,wow that's just crazy... and that's not even being on the beach.

Prices are totally insane in SM area. It's clearly no longer for anyone except for the 1%'ers of the world.. especially for buying a place...and it's been that way for a while now.

What do you mean by "more behind?" Are the wages even lower than LA's?

I wouldn't be surprised, San Diego has what's called the "sunshine discount" or "paradise discount/tax" - meaning that affordability of shelter is probably no better than LA County.

Also depends on the location. Of course Santa Monica or any beach community is going to be high demand and thus costly. But the inland empire, the high desert offer housing for about the national average. You'd still be in SoCal and the weather is still very good and there are jobs.

There is a way to get around that. Like renting a room at a house in Santa Monica for a couple of thousand dollars. This is very common on the Westside to see lower income singles renting rooms in houses or apartments for lower prices.

I have to agree. I have had 20 interviews in the last month in Los Angeles. Everywhere from Brentwood to Downtown LA to Hollywood.... McDonalds, Starbucks, west coast tan, Rock N Fish and so on. If it is a numbers game, I should be picking which of 5 jobs I choose for myself. Its not like that though. I am a 37 yr old white female. The lady from McDonalds told it all in the handshake at the beginning of the interview. She was one if those Hispanics that could pass for white w/o the accent. She barely touched my index finger And I was holding out my hand to shake. There us no reason I do not have a job yet, except that I am the wrong demographic. I thought affirmative action was supposed to keep a mix if everyone employed. What I see it doing is keeping white people unemployed. But if I say that out loud.... Well, you know, that makes me the bad guy. I just want to work. Got a food service card and everything.

If this post is any reflection on your intellect, it is no wonder you are still applying for jobs at McDonalds. And usually I would try and explain why you're wrong, but my guess is it would be a waste of time and energy in this instance.

Really. You think you know a person because of a message posted out if frustration ?Moderator cut: personal. Is this the same reply you made to every post that was similar to mine. I did not he to finish college, but I started. I am no fool. I have a logical mind and I can see the things directly in front of me. I don't care what you, or anyone, think(s) or feel(s) about what is 'true' and right there, plain as day.
Do you live in LA? Work or visit? Walk in any public service establishment, store, restaurant, bank, doctor, dentist, etc... You get the picture. Open your eyes and just do the #s. How many people are working that shift. How many women, or men.then how many Asian Hispanic Caucasian African American and so on. If you know how to do math, maybe you will get to have epiphany of your own.

Lower skilled jobs are hard to find here right now. From another thread:
