So maybe the question should have been, "Do large parts of LA resemble the armpit of Mexico?"

Some parts of Tijuana don't even look like most of Mexico outside of other border cities however... Tijuana is basically a city that grew up side by side with the US being on the border--it's much newer than most cities in Mexico.

I saw alot of commonalities between Tijuana and some parts of LA. The housing and commercial architecture between both cities look similar. The biggest difference were some of the shantytowns on the outskirts that I've never seen in the US.

LA is Mexico City's largest suburb, so of course it looks likes Mexico.

and I believe, if I am not mistaken it has the largest number of Mexicans in the world outside of Mexico a City. When I grew up in Los Angeles it had regions that were almost solid or close to solid Hispanic. That was the 50s. 1950s that is.

I think we can safely say that the cities of the Californias (Alta California is the modern state of California, and Baja California is split into two) resemble each other, and probably influenced each other due to their proximity and shared history. Just the way northern parts of north eastern Mexico feel like Texas and vice versa. As lots of Californians are most familiar with Tijuana, they will most likely think of Tijuana when they go to East L.A. or any other similar parts. I have a good friend who is from Tijuana, and the first time I took him to DTLA, he said it felt like Tijuana lol. He also said that of the Mission in San Francisco though. Tijuana itself is very diverse with different neighborhoods, and for the most part it is getting better. What it doesn't have is the SMOG control that California has, therefore it ends up looking like a real dirty city. Quality of life though it is up there with the best cities in Mexico, despite its not so charming appearance.

Also, I find it really annoying how so many Mexicans are so quick to deny Tijuana as a 'real' Mexican city. Just as annoying as when Americans from other parts come to Southern California and say that Los Angeles isn't a 'real' city. So in essence, that's something they both have in common with each other...two cities that are hated (for no real reason) by denizens of other cities in their respective countries, and two cities that create their own paths instead of follow the rest. I definitely don't mind L.A. resembling Tijuana in that regard.

Long live the Californias
