Release the Bats is a good club.

4th st in Long Beach is a low-key trendoid area.

The Bradbury Building is neat. Downtown LA architecture is nice.

Barnsdall Park is nice. There's a Wright building there. I don't know if it's open.

Pasadena has a lot of architectural stuff going on.

Overall though LA isn't a great buildings town.

Ethnic food in LA is really good. Jonathan Gold usually gets it right. Just ask random people for tips.

Not sure it is off-beat enough, but Watts Towers are on my list too as I've heard they are also really amazing to see.
Yeah, Das Bunker's pretty cool place. But I never liked Bar Sinister. The place is too much of a Hot Topic tourist trap. The place is too full of pretentious people.

Been to Bar Sinister at a friend's invite once, a few years ago (his art hung up there in exhibition). Wasn't impressed, unless you consider young girl's asses hanging out getting spanked by skeevy old men entertainment. Ugh. No thanks. I guess it fits the description of "disturbing", at least for me. The music was not good, and I don't remember being able to order snacks there. What is a night out without snacks?

Boardner's used to be pretty good. However, they've taken chicken strips off the menu a year or so ago. This presents a serious problem.

Much prefer The Edison downtown, with their burlesque shows, silent films, decor, Absinthe Fairy, and dress code. Expensive, but worth it. It's weird, but with a side of class and self-respect. The food/ drinks are pretty good, too. They have good calamari and peanut butter & banana sandwiches:
The Edison ... living history in Downtown Los Angeles

For architecture, might want to check out the LA Central Library downtown, not far from Edison:

It's a national historic site than not many people know about or visit.
